Is Cystic medial necrosis associated with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)?
Cystic medial necrosis is associated with EDS as well as other conditions. This is a degenerative disease of the media of the aorta and other arteries with loss of elastic tissue and muscle cells. It is a pathological substrate for aortic dissection. It may also be manifested by proximal aortic ectasia or aneurysm. Cystic medial necrosis may occur as an isolated abnormality or as part of a systemic connective tissue disease such asĀ  Marfans syndrome or Ehlers Danlos syndrome. There is an increased risk of cystic medial degeneration and aortic or arterial dissection during pregnancy. (Amersham Health Medcyclopaedia) www.amershamhealth.com
